Intention Analysis

Intention Analysis is the identiﬁcation of intentions from text, be it the intent to purchase or the intent to sell or to complain, quit, inquire, request, opine or to compare, in incoming customer messages, email messages, social media messages or in call center transcripts.

Early detection of the intent to complain, accuse and to quit can help prevent customer churn.

There are many advanced brand metrics that can be estimated using intentions. One of them is brand loyalty. Another is market commoditization.

Intention Analysis algorithms can be built to be very resistant to noise and so can be useful for crisis monitoring.

Purchase Intention

The first commercial Intention Analysis product from Aiaioo Labs was a single-intention product deployed in early 2011 to generate leads from Twitter and Facebook feeds.

The result was a consistent click-through-rate of 7% on advertisement directed at the leads that had been identified.

In comparison, click-through-rates for advertisements on social media keep at around 0.01%.

Example

The sentence "I want to buy a new phone" reveals an intent to purchase.

Inquire Intention

The detection of the intention to inquire allows you to spot any questions as they come in. The technology can be used to manage communications in call centers so that executives can check off any customer questions and ensure that all queries have been responded to.

Example

The sentence "Does the iPod 16GB Wifi model come with cameras on it?" reveals an intention to elicit information (to inquire).

Additional Uses

An analysis of the most frequent topics that are the object of inquiries helps optimise the presentation of information from an SEO and SEM perspective, and the location of links to FAQs and information banks.

Direct Intention

The intention to direct is observed when a request is being made, or an order is being given, or an operational directive is being issued.

This technology can be used to identify business processes that self-service tools are not adequate for.

Direct intention can also be used to turn phones into personal assistants.

The sentence "Contact us at sales@aiaioo.com" is a directive.

Opine Intention

One of the intentions we can detect is the intention to express an opinion about something. This is another name for sentiment analysis.

Our sentiment analysis engine can detect not just sentence level sentiments but also entity level sentiments and the holder of the sentiment. It also handles negations as shown in the example.

Example

The sentence "I can't say I don't like the C40 camera" expresses a positive opinion.

Aiaioo Labs' Intention Analysis API can detect that:

There is intent to opine and the polarity of the opinion is positive.
That the object of the opinion is a 'C40 camera'.
That the holder of the opinion is 'I'.

Sell Intention

It is very important to detect the intent to sell before compiling sentiment reports.

In certain industries like automobiles, a large percentage of mentions of a brand are sales pitches that typically go like this:

"Excellent 2003 Toyota Prius for sale."

It would be quite misleading to count that as an expression of positive sentiment by a customer.

The sentence "Soggy 2003 phone for sale" reveals an intent to sell.

Wish Intention

The wish intention can be seen when someone wishes for something that is not really attainable or is not for sale.

An example would be when someone wishes they were vacationing on a beach somewhere far away.

Wish intentions can be used to detect sales opportunities in service industries.

Example

The sentence "I want to be a thousand miles away from here" is a wish.

Aiaioo Labs' Intention Analysis API can detect that:

The intent is to wish.
That the object of the wish is a 'to be a thousand miles away from here'.
That the holder of the intent to purchase is 'I'.

Experiments have shown that we can reliably detect wish intentions distinctly from purchase intentions.

Quit Intention

Identifying the intention to quit is useful for churn prediction. We provide tools for detecting quit intention in sentences, for example, when a person threatens to close an account, or when they mention an intent to switch to using an alternative product or service.

Examples of sentences with quit intention show how varied the expressions that people use to indicate an intent to quit might be:

I'd like to terminate my account forthwith.
I'll never buy another Slug ever again.

One particularly difficult case of quit intention is the case where the quit intention only becomes clear when you examine multiple sentences.

An example is the pair of sentences "Bye bye Zebook! Welcome Boogle+!!!"

Another is the sentence "I want to buy a Brownberry. #ihatemyiphone"

Even we can't automatically identify these (yet)!

The Intention to Accuse

The intention to criticize is nothing but the intention to express a negative opinion.

The intention to complain is observed when a person gives voice to a problem.

The intention to accuse takes it a step further in that the affected party also faults/blames someone.

Complain Intention

Identifying the intention to complain is useful in social CRM applications. We provide tools for detecting complaints in forums and online, for example, when a person tweets about a low quality cell phone network.

The server is down.
The cheque did not arrive.
